ForestFoods and Tatu City announce the first urban agroforestry farm inside Kenya’s 5,000-acre new city, unveiled during the Africa Climate Summit 2023.
NAIROBI — ForestFoods and Tatu City announced a partnership to establish the first urban agroforestry farm inside Kenya’s 5,000-acre new city, unveiled against the backdrop of the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi (4–6 September 2023).
Under the partnership, ForestFoods is establishing a working syntropic agroforestry farm within Tatu City, the mixed-use Special Economic Zone developed by Rendeavour. The first farm site sits beside Crawford International School, placing a producing, layered food system in daily view of thousands of students and residents.
The farm will grow carbon-neutral, organic produce for the city — vegetables, fruits and herbs cultivated in dense, layered plantings that combine crops, trees, fodder and livestock in the same production area. The syntropic method, developed over decades of Brazilian practice, rehabilitates soil as it produces: building organic matter, holding water, and returning biodiversity to ground that conventional farming depletes.
For Tatu City, the partnership embeds food production and green infrastructure into the city’s fabric rather than importing produce across long supply chains. For ForestFoods, it extends the model beyond the Limuru flagship farm into an urban setting — proof that regenerative agriculture is not a rural nostalgia project but a working part of how modern African cities can feed themselves.
The Tatu City farm joins ForestFoods’ growing network: the 2019 Tamalu pilot farm on Mount Kenya, the flagship Brackenhurst farm in Limuru — established in 2022 on a former football pitch and expanded since — and the ten-hectare Shimba Hills site in Kwale County, where high-value spices, tropical fruits and timber are planned.
ForestFoods produce is available direct from the farms and through retail partner Greenspoon, with every crate traceable to its farm, field and harvest date.
